A reading order note
Why start with Book 2?
It sounds backwards. We get it. But here's the short version: No One Can Trust a Fox is the easiest, warmest on-ramp to Silva Island. It introduces the world, the tone, and several of the characters who carry the whole series — without leaning as heavily on the harder themes that frame The Scavengers and the Storm.
Book 1 is a story about grief, fear, and trust. It's worth reading — but it lands much better once your family already loves the island and the animals that live there. Starting with Book 2 lets your kids fall in love with Squeak, Hoot, Beaver, and Misty first, then ask the bigger questions in Book 1 with characters they already know.
If you'd rather read in publication order, that's wonderful too. There's no wrong door into Silva Island. We just find more families enjoy the journey when Book 2 leads the way.
